Geographical Indications Registration

Geographical Indications (GIs) refer to a type of intellectual property right that identifies a product as originating from a specific geographical location, where the qualities, reputation, or characteristics of the product are essentially attributable to that place of origin. These indications can be applied to  wide range of products, including agricultural, natural, or manufactured goods.The primary objectives of Geographical Indications are to Protect Producers of producers and promote traditional skills and craftsmanship associated with a particular region to ensure their fair recognition and compensation for their unique products, And Consumer  with assurance regarding the origin and quality of the products being originating from specific geographical origin with certain standards and qualities associated with products and promotes the economic development of specific regions Examples of Geographical Indications include:

  • Champagne: This sparkling wine can only be labeled as "Champagne" if it comes from the Champagne region in France.

  • Darjeeling Tea: This tea must be produced in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India.

International agreements,  on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO), provide a framework for the protection of Geographical Indications on a global scale. Fee starts from INR 5000/-.
